Abstract

This research examines the rules of generality and specificity in Quranic interpretation through Al-Lubāb fī ʿUlūm al-Kitāb by Ibn ʿĀdil Al-Ḥanbalī, covering the text from verse "93" of Sūrat Al-Tawbah to the end of the Quran. The study focuses on identifying and tracing the instances in which Ibn ʿĀdil applied these juristic and interpretive principles in his exegesis.

    The study begins with an introductory section that presents a scholarly    overview of Ibn ʿĀdil Al-Ḥanbalī and his exegetical work Al-Lubāb fī ʿUlūm Al-Kitāb, highlighting its academic value and the author’s general methodological approach. The introduction also defines the principles of generality and specificity from both their linguistic and technical perspectives and clarifies their importance in understanding the Quranic text and deriving its intended meanings.

The research then moves to the applied analytical section, in which the most prominent rules of generality and specificity employed by Ibn ʿĀdil are examined. These include cases where a term is expressed in a general form while a specific meaning is intended, the principle that a general expression remains operative unless evidence indicates restriction, the indication of generality conveyed by an indefinite noun in contexts of negation or prohibition, and the rule concerning Quranic addressed to the Prophet "peace be Upon Him" while intending the Muslim community at large.

The study adopts an inductive methodology by systematically tracing the occurrences of these principles in Al-Lubāb and analyzing Ibn ʿĀdil’smanner of employing them, thereby demonstrating their role in shaping the interpretive understanding of the Quranic text.
